One of the things we encourage our athletes to do is to eat as soon as they get up in the morning - within 30 minutes. We want them to take in a good source of protein and complex carbohydrates. But the most important thing to do is EAT!
Your body hasn't been fed for 8 hours. It has been literally living off of eating away at the muscle you have worked so hard to build in the weight room. As soon as you wake up, EAT! Stop your body from tearing apart all of your hard work!
Eating directly before bed time can also help. That way your body has something to work on for the first few hours of sleep. If you REALLY want to get serious, wake up in the middle of the night and eat something! That can be getting extreme, but it works!

Maybe this needs to be a whole new thread...but what are about the use of supplements or additional nutrition intakes. What I am curious about is the use of protein powder or other protein extras that players can take? Is it an okay recommendation for kids under 18 to use whey protein? What should be avoided?

Some states have rules about what you can and cannot recommend to a player. I'm pretty sure Texas has some real strict laws on what you can and cannot recommend, which I thought was suprising. I really don't even know the laws here in Virginia because (as you know), we haven't ever been allowed to recommend anything by in-house rules. BUT, personally I see no problem with protein supplements and weight gainers. Its a bear for a kid who leaves the house at 7am and gets home after 6pm to take in the amount of protein and calories they really need. The biggest mistake being made right now is rather than talk to kids about supplements, we pretend they don't exist and let them run off to GNC and drop hundreds of dollars on crap they don't need or could be harmful to them. Or they just plain don't take it the right way. Plus, selling protein shakes to kids after workouts at a marked up price would be a great fundraiser.
