How many high schools out there (maybe colleges?) continually kick the extra point, when their kicker is 50% on PATs? Just thinking about it - if I feel confident in my offense to get 3 yards at least 25% of the time, then I'm better off going for 2 than kicking the PAT, right?
I think high school coaches get carried away too much in either 1) trying to keep the kicker happy or 2) trying to look like the big boys on Sunday. But the guy on Sunday is 90+ percent. Your HS kicker is a paltry 52%, he's a head case, and you have a running back with 1500 yards in 8 games. I just think if you really studied your games, going for 2 could be more beneficial for A LOT of high school teams.
By the way, not talking about teams that just have no kicker - i'm talking about teams who have one, he just isn't that good.

I think it depends on your goalline/short yardage offense. If you have a team that can get the tough yards or have a great short yardage pass game, then you go for two. If you have a team that is inconsistent in these situations, kick the ball. It reminded me of the first drive of the Super Bowl. The steelers had a 4th and goal from inside the one and I'm sure everybody is thinking they should go for it. Well Coach Tomlin made the correct choice because if you watched them throughout the year, they were statisically the worst team in 4th and ones. He wasn't sure his team could get that yard and you take the points. Its really about making an honest assessment about your team and your players.

Isn't the average fan going to be ticked if you walk away with a 2-point conversion 40% of the time, as opposed to a 1-point PAT 75% of the time? But (check my math) isn't the 40% conversion netting you more points? Obviously there are situations, where it's right, but... if you COULD convert that often, wouldn't it be better?

I always assumed the average fan was a riverboat gambler and wanted you to go for two and go for it on fourth down. They always groan when teams punt on fourth and ones once they have passed their own 40.

I say you have to go for two unless your kicker is at least 90% accurate. You've made me reexamine my philsophy

The average fan is also great at second guessing decisions when they don't work out. You could always have one game where you score four times, go four two four times, and win by 1, then come back the next time, go for two 4 times, fail on all for attempts and lose by one.
Guess you need to figure out which one is going to happen more often.
