Just did a podcast on the Jet Sweep, and mentioned the Fly Sweep. Anyone have an explanation on the difference other than a back coming to the playside A versus backside A? I know that Speckman's fly series has a lot to it, but isn't it really just a difference in terminology?

Fly suggests bowing the 1 yard of depth after getting the handoff.

Thanks coach, is that to give time/angle for the red/yellow (or is it orange?) fly sweep?

Thanks coach, is that to give time/angle for the red/yellow (or is it orange?) fly sweep? Coach: It does a couple of things - it prevents an unblocked playside 3 technique from blowing up the play in the backfield, and yes, it does facilitate the cut into the C gap on the Yellow Light sweep. I've run Red Light Sweep both with and without the slide step, but I always use it on Green Light Sweep (I don't use the Yellow Light concept in my offense...) There is also a big historical gap between the Fly Sweep and the Jet Sweep -- the Fly dates back to the early 50's, while the Jet first appeared in the 70's or 80's. Some coaches will also tell you that the Jet is a play or series, while the Fly is a philosophy -- Fly teams tend to base more of what they do on the speed sweep concept than Wing-T teams that run the Jet.
