What do you see as the advantages of a 4-2-5 over a 4-3 defense? Has anyone run the 4-2-5 with a Quarters/Cover 2 style of coverage?

Joe- we run a "4-3" cover 2 scheme, but we never have 3 LB's in the box like the FSU guys and some others. We are a true read and react defense. Vs a spread team and Dbls look we have both Sam and Will split the difference between OT and #2 wr (playing C-2). However vs. a trips-open set our Sam aligns outside shoulder of #2 (we check to C-4, qrtrs to that side) and our Will bumps in the box with Mike. We generally play C-2 weak but it can easily turn into man. In big pass downs we generally call C-4 (qrtrs) all the way across and leave just a 4-1 look inside.

In the 4-3 our Will never came into the box, except in the Under front, or as you said against a 3x1 set. I like using Cover 2 into the boundary with a single receiver, not as high on it when we get two receivers removed into the boundary.
Are you knifing that DE into the B gap from the weak side when you're in the 4-1 box (doubles)? Or do you ask the Mike to hit those gaps (in our 4-3 he's responsible for either strong A or weak B depending on flow), with the backside linebacker folding in for cutback?

No we haven't "knifed" the weakside DE in the B-gap- sounds like it might be a good idea at certain times though. We do Blitz from the weakside many times on pass downs and certain other game situations. When we do this we send WDE in B-gap and WLB off edge or even inside. Do you guys blitz much from the strongside (SLB) when you have 2x2 and 3x1 sets? Historically we have not- not really willing to give up SLB from pass coverage- we don't have alot of "speed" back there, so we zone alot.

I hate checking blitzes, so if here's any way we can run it, we'll run it. If I want to call a blitz I'm probably going to roll 3, and the Mike backer tries to get under #3. The safety crashes down directly over #2 and reroutes - which can be a pretty sight to see. And I don't mind gambling on running man defense because the QB shouldn't get much time to make a decision.
